Café Hitom

Café Hitom

Creating a café environment with and for developmentally disabled

Café Hitom is located at Telefonplan in a suburb to Stockholm. It’s a café where developmentally disabled get a chance to have a job and a place to go during their days. This was a place not being taken cared of in terms of interiors and where very dark and gloomy. Me and Else Abrahamsen asked the staff for a cooperation between us as interior architecture students and the people working in the café.The idea with the project was that the great vitality of the persons working in the café should be visible in the interior. The challenge in the design was creating something “imperfect”, something where it was possible for them to participate on their own terms. The result became a place much more colourful and pleasant. All the furnishing was either made or painted by the participants or bought from cheap vintage stores. This was a project about designing with a purpose and subjecting to certain conditions
